It’s officially a big milestone for web, as mobile devices surpasses desktop usage!
For the first time in history, more users accessed the web from mobile devices than they did desktops in October. According to StatCounter, mobile and tablet devices accounted for 51.3% of internet usage worldwide in October.
StatCounter also revealed that the maturity of markets impacts on the dominant mean of access. With emerging markets, such as India, where mobile devices account for over 75% of internet use. Whereas, mature markets such as the US and UK sees users favour desktops over mobile. With quicker internet access thanks to 4G, the trend is constantly narrowing.
So, this doesn’t come as a big surprise given other recent milestones. Last year, Google revealed more searches through its engine were carried out via mobile devices. ComScore found that the number of mobile-only internet users had surpassed desktop users in the US. In October, the IAB UK released its latest ad spend study, revealing that mobile ad spend also overtook desktop for the time time.
All these insights remind us that this has been a long time in the making. Could this new data from StatCounter be the tipping point that will lead to an even sharper change in the clash between desktop and mobile? Only time will tell.
One thing we are sure of is that this marks a huge moment for the web overall and companies too. Going forward, companies that have yet to decide to go mobile really should or they risk missing out on a big opportunity.
